The Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo kicked off today and will run through Saturday, July 28, 2013. The Rodeo is the oldest fishing tournament in the United States, having been first held in 1928, making this the 91st running of the tournament.

The tournament is run out of the Sand Dollar Marina off Louisiana Highway One. While tarpon are the tournament’s focus, anglers may also compete in categories of Shoreline and Big Game. In addition to tarpon, shoreline anglers target  grouper, amberjack, redfish, king mackerel, cobia, flounder, sheepshead, and speckled trout. Anglers fishing in the Big game division target blue marlin, white marlin, wahoo, yellowfin tuna, blackfin tuna, and dolphin. Those participating in the tarpon division, of course, are looking for silver kings.

Scales close each night at 6:00 and awards will be presented on Saturday during the awards ceremony beginning at 8:30.
